Patterns are tricky, little things I must say. Whereas most people have a closet full of basics, I have a closet full of stand-alone pieces. Even my "basics" are in not so basic colors. What do you do in a situation as such? There are a few rules for mixing and matching patterns and colors that will help you along your way.
Rule #1: No pattern overkill.
It's very tempting to overdue a pattern that you love. The patterns that I love consist of bold colors and abstract patterns. I was shopping at the thrift store and saw a lot of 80s styles that attracted my attention, but those infamous two-piece suits should NOT be worn as a set.
A busy pattern all over doesn't allow your outfit to have a focal point. You can't appreciate the design elements of the garment because all you can see is PATTERN! If you buy a two-piece that's too much to wear together, wear each piece separately! You will create a much more interesting look by pairing each with accenting basics. Layer the patterned piece to tone it down.
Rule #2: Different Patterns: Big-Little...YES...when they follow the same color story!
Pairing different patterns IS okay if the color stories are the same. For example, I can wear stripes and polkadots together if they are both red, white, and black...
However, one pattern must be more dominant that the other. Keep in mind that the dominant pattern should highlight one of your best features. It is also a good idea to break up the patterns with a solid piece like a belt!
Rule #3: Different Patterns: Big-Big...NO!
