Soccer Saturday: Strikers vs Islanders - USA vs Mexico
It begins at 7:30 pm when the Fort Lauderdale Strikers play against the Puerto Rico Islanders at the Mecca of South Florida soccer, Lockhart Stadium.
The Strikers are on a 5 game undefeated streak and look to extend that at home against an Islanders team that come off a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks.
The last match the Strikers played was a 0-0 tie away at Montreal. Strikers defender Martyn Lancaster made a last second save to deny the Impact a goal. While the Strikers had a legitimate goal denied by the referee. Also of note on that play was the absence of video coverage on the highlights by the Impact. Something to make you go hmmmmm... But as you can see from the screen shot taken by a fan (Red Harvest on bigsoccer) you can see the ball clearly cleared the goal line. It looked in to us!
But now we must put that in the past and concentrate on the Islanders!

Hola Amigos!Today Burrito bring you the soccer movie of the month! It's called "El Chanfle" It's like the original Waterboy movie except in Spanish and with the real Football not that pig skin thing Burrito like to chew on. "El Chanfle" is a movie created by Roberto Gómez Bolaños, also known as Chespirito. El Chanfle is the main character and he is club America's waterboy. It was filmed in Mexico in 1978. Chespirito should sue Adam Sandler for stealing his idea!
Go get you some popcorns or make you some taquitos! Get you some drinks, a cervecita or some tequila! Sit back and enjoy "El Chanfle"!

Uncle Ed's Mother's day preview: Mom meets Ecuador national team
My mom is so cool she had a few of the players sign autographs for me and she took pictures with them too.
Here she is with defender and captain of the team Ivan "Bam Bam" Hurtado. A World Cup veteran, Hurtado has played in Mexico, Qatar, Colombia, Spain and currently plays for Ecuadorian champions Deportivo Quito. Hurtado has played for Ecuador more then any player in that country's history (163 times so far).

Ulises de la Cruz is another world cup veteran and is poised to complete his 100th appearance for the Ecuadorian national side. De La Cruz has played for Cruzeiro of Brazil, Hibernian in Scotland, Aston Villa, Reading and Birmingham City in England and currently plays with South American champion LDU Quito. Ulises is also known in Ecuador for his charity work and has been named a UNICEF ambassador.

Jaime Ivan Kaviedes is perhaps the most traveled player in Ecuadorian history. Having played for almost every major league in the world and scoring in a world cup. In 1998 Ivan was the highest scorer in the world with 43 goals in one season for Emelec in the Ecuadorian league. In 1999 he moved on to Italy with Perugia, then Spain with Celta de Vigo, Mexico with Puebla then back to Spain with Real Valladolid. Portugal with Porto, Crystal Palace in England, Argentinos Juniors of Argentina and more. Currently with Macara in Ecuador he is rumored to be headed to MLS in July.
My mom rocks!

South Africa's World Cup has its 32 teams
We now know the 32 countries that qualified for the world Cup:
For CONCACAF it was The United States, Mexico and Honduras.
For CONMEBOL it was Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.
For Africa it was Algeria, Camerun, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and the host South Africa.
For Asia it was Australia, North Korea, South Korea and Japan.
For UEFA: England, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Greece Serbia, Portugal, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands,
Oh and Last but not least New Zealand.
There are really no "Virgins" that will participate in the South African World Cup though some might argue Slovakia and Serbia are first timers. The Slovaks were part of Checoslovakia and the Serbs have a long tradition with Yugoslavia and the last WC played as Serbia and Montenegro.
Who will win? My bet is with Spain and Brazil!

USA and Miami FC lose, Ultras at Republica Deportiva and more
It was a tough Sunday in many ways for the Miami Ultras. Once again we were invited to attend Univision's Republica Deportiva for the USA vs Mexico Gold Cup final. Everything was great, confidence was high. The Mexican fans chanted their typical Mexican tunes while the Ultras began to drown them out with our incessant USA! USA! USA! One of us started to yell "USA es tu papa" (USA is your daddy!) and that became the hymn until the second half when the Mexicans were awarded a penalty. It was to mark the end for the U.S. After that we received such a whooping that it will last us a life time!

The Greatest Miami Fusion fan of all time... to become Barca Miami / Miami FCB fan!
Throughout Sports history there are fans who have become an insignia or symbol of a team. The Lakers have Jack Nicholson, The Knicks have Spike Lee... The Miami Fusion had Burrito.Very little is know about this mysterious and solitary soul. According to Burrito he was Born Mardoqueo de la Torre y Chancleta one cold night on the year of our lord July 4, 1980 in the city of Toluca, Mexico. A Toluca Fan since birth he came to this country by ways unknown and now resides in Homestead, Florida. I was able to get a hold of him by chance, while making a reservation at a restaurant in Homestead called El Toro. He worked there, we talked about Futbol and here is what happened: (I tried my best to capture Burritos accent. My nickname is Chichi btw...read on...)
Chichi (Uncle Ed): Just like many of us, your heart must have been broken when our team The Miami Fusion was taken from us.
Burrito: Pinches Putos nos chingaron! All Burrito have was that team ese. If it wasn't for the Mexican League and my mami back in Mexico I would have died vato.
C: Why the name Burrito?
B: Why the name Chichi ese?
C: ChiChi is a nickname.
B: In Mexico they call boobies chichis vato, you should change the name. Burrito call himself Burrito after favorite food and because when Burrito play Futbol people say Burrito looked like Ariel "Burrito" Ortega from Argentina.
C: Is it true you used to take the bus to Lockhart Stadium from Homestead? That's got to be like 50 miles at least.
B: Si, it was very far but when you love Futbol like Burrito love Futbol then you no think of it. Burrito take a walkman and some music by Vicente Fernandez and time go by fast. But now Burrito Have his own car.
C: Have you tried doing something about your accent and writing skills?
B: No
C: You should
B: .....(Silence)
C: Did I offend you?
B: Que? Burrito drop tortilla...
C: Oh... never mind.
On that note, It was nice talking to you. You should come back to Bigsoccer where you used to be a hit or I invite you to write on my blog
http://football-miami-n-beyond.blogspot.com/
B: Burrito have too many enemies in Bigsoccer, people no like him there an give him Red Card! Beside, Burrito too Macho man for them, maybe when Miami FCB or Barca Miami whatever them chingados call themselves come then Burrito make return but this time not with the Afusionados, but with the Miami Ultras! Burrito take cow bell and hot mamacitas with him to game. Burrito also make quesadillas for all Ultras!
Burrito will be one of the contributors on this blog so stay tuned!!!
