In signing with Phillies, Cliff Lee chases memory of the World Series run, but he may regret decision

Cliff Lee yawned and chewed gum while his glove, a basket hanging near his chest, snagged the Johnny Damon popup. It was Game 1 of the 2009 World Series at Yankee Stadium, and Lee was in the 6th inning of a masterpiece sublime enough to include that iconic moment. In the outfield and dugout, his teammates laughed and marveled at Lee’s nonchalance.

That catch represented the peak of an otherworldly postseason for the lefty, and defined Lee for the Philadelphia public as a Phillie forever. It had the same effect on the pitcher, whose hurt was raw when the Phils traded him to Seattle in December to make room in the payroll for Roy Halladay. 12 months later, clearly still pulled by the memory of a heightened experience, Lee did what professional athletes almost never do: He prioritized desire over dollars.

Of course, the approximately $100 millions that the Phillies will pay Lee over the next 5 years is more than almost anyone would make in 5 lifetimes, but that’s almost irrelevant in baseball. Athletes are among the most competitive people in this competitive country, and in their business, contracts indicate status and success nearly as much as titles do. Lee could have become one of the highest-paid athletes in the world had he signed with the Yankees. No matter how much he will make, it could not have been easy to turn down so much more.

Instead of doing that, he will try to recreate his favorite memory. It’s a nice narrative, even a noble impulse, but it is fraught with risk and potential disappointment. The Phillies are already altered from the team Lee joined in July 2009, when he was traded from Cleveland.

The Phils’ lineup is reduced, due to age and attrition. Jayson Werth, Lee’s good friend and the team’s only righthanded power hitter, is gone, having decided to accept a Publishers Clearing House check for $126 million from the Washington Nationals. Infielders Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins are aging, and could not make it through last season without suffering serious and nagging injuries. This month, centerfielder Shane Victorino turned 30, the last Phils starter to cross the precarious boundary. Decline awaits in a few years, if not sooner.

Derek Jeter can’t play shortstop in a year or 2? Move him somewhere else, and sign an All-Star replacement. CC’s arm is dead after all those innings? Well, when is King Felix a free agent?

Unlike the Yankees, the Phils will not be able to buy their way out of a rebuilding phase. Had Lee signed with New York, he would have received the implicit promise of $200 million payrolls every season, enough to purchase playoff contention despite an abundance of aging regulars.

The Yankees would have given Lee not just more money, but the security of knowing he wouldn’t ever be stuck for long on an irrelevant team. The Phillies might be great next year, and a rotation beginning with Halladay, Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt sounds like one of the best ever. But what if it doesn’t immediately click, due to injuries or inconsistency or other human frailty (remember, that group without Lee was supposed to win a World Series this year)?

This Phils team has a one-year window before it sees sweeping change. Oswalt, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez, Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson have potentially expiring deals, and could follow Werth out of town in eleven months. Halladay, Hamels and Victorino might follow in the ensuing years. And Cliff Lee might be stuck chasing the ghosts of an elusive memory, and wishing he had just taken the money.

When actor Wesley Snipes enters prison Thursday, he will leave behind his wife, young children and celebrity neighbors in the wealthy Florida enclave made infamous by next-door neighbor Tiger Woods.

The prison camp in Lewis Run in northwestern Pennsylvania pales by comparison, but is still worlds away from the harsh prison fortresses depicted in the Snipes films “Undisputed” and “Brooklyn’s Finest.” Federal Correctional Institution McKean, a minimum-security camp, does not have fences around its perimeter. The 300 nonviolent inmates live in barracks that feature two-man rooms, daily showers and double-feature movie showings Friday through Sunday. Alas, no NC-17, R or X ratings allowed, which knocks out much of Snipes’ action-heavy repertoire.

The most jarring aspect of the celebrity’s stay might be the 5 daily head counts, 3 during the overnight hours. And Snipes, who earned a reported $13 millions for the “Blade: Trinity” sequel, will have to adjust to earning just pennies an hour handling kitchen, laundry or other campus chores. And, he can spend just $290 a month at the prison commissary.

Snipes has appeared in dozens of studio films, from “White Men Can’t Jump” and “Demolition Man” in the early 1990s to the blockbuster Blade trilogy.

None of which will score him any points at McKean, officials insist.

“We recognize that he’s high profile, but we treat all our inmates the same,” spokeswoman Shirley White told The Associated Press last week.

“I’m an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance,” said Snipes, who had pursued theater and dance from an early age, attending the vaunted High School for the Performing Arts in New York City.

According to United States. prosecutors, the actor failed to file any tax returns for at least a decade, and owed $2.7 millions in taxes on $13.8 millions in income from 1999 to 2001 alone. Snipes, a dues-paying member of a tax-protest group that challenges the government’s right to collect taxes, described himself at his 2008 sentencing as a naive truth-seeker.

Tuesday night, he told CNN’s “Larry King Live” that he wasn’t nervous about reporting to prison.

On Wed, he made a last-minute request for a new trial. In the emergency motion, Snipes said that the judge erred by not allowing defense attorneys to interview jurors about misconduct allegations. At McKean, if he reports as scheduled, he can pursue his spirituality at weekly meetings of nearly any religious group imaginable, from Wiccans to Jehovah’s Witnesses to Spanish-speaking Evangelical Catholics.

The martial-arts enthusiast can get his exercise playing sand volleyball or indoor basketball, or work out on an elliptical machine or stair climber. And he can tap into his fun side through badminton, bocci or bridge.

Should he pull a muscle in a pickup game, the payment required at the infirmary is just $2.

But it is not all fun and games.

The daily wake-up call is at 6:35 a.m. The mundane jobs run 7 hours a day. There’s little fashion flair to the prison-issued khakis. And contact in the visitors room is limited to “a kiss,” according to the prison handbook. Snipes has tried to delay his arrival while he takes his appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. But the trial judge said he had gotten a fair trial.

U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges saw in Snipes “a history of contempt” for U.S. tax laws, the judge said at sentencing. Never mind that the actor, changing course, had delivered $5 million in checks to the IRS that day. Hodges imposed consecutive one-year terms for the 3 misdemeanor convictions.

“Someday, every fighter loses,” says the prison boxer Monroe Hutchens, played by Snipes, in 2002′s “Undisputed.” ”In the end, everybody gets beaten. The most you can hope for is that you stay on top a while.”

A reputed media source reported that the professional ballroom dancer is engaged to his longtime boyfriend Brad Penny. Karina Smirnoff said that they felt their relation under wraps because her family is in New York and Brad Penny’s home is in Oklahoma and hence they wanted to tell their family first and then announce it to the media.

A reputed media source reported that Karina Smirnoff excitedly showed her 4.5 carat diamond engagement ring at a party in Las Vegas over this weekend. The stunning ballroom dancer previously dated her “Dancing with the Stars” co-star Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy but they parted their ways on 2009 after dating nine months. UAA Professor Sheds Light On BP Oil Spill

Rick Steiner of the University of Anchorage Alaska gave a presentation on several universities and conferences regarding the cause of the April Gulf of Mexico oil spill. According to his research, too, there are a lot of similarities between the BP oil spill and the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill.

Steiner said that the oil spill which triggered a lot of grief for Alaska’s underwater ecosystem can be blamed on not one, not two, but probably 20 causes. The “string of faults” includes “human error and equipment malfunction”, “government malfeasance”, and not to mention that “government oversight was totally ineffective”.

Steiner also said the Deepwater Horizon was designed improperly, and a lot of mechanisms failed. Naturally, the effects of the disaster escalated.

The oil spill was one of the most talked about disasters around the world. To this day, its environmental repercussions stand to prove that criticisms that have been made against BP were totally rational.

Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday morning November 7^th, in all states except Arizona and Hawaii, giving those working hard in the struggling economy an extra hour of much needed rest.  All states except for Arizona and Hawaii chose to adopt the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which codified the country’s “Fall Back, Spring Ahead” practice. Every year on the first Sunday in November clocks are set back one hour, and on the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour.

Ben Franklin is often credited with initiating the Fall Back, Spring Ahead clock tweaking, but he only proposed a time change in jest to tease the Parisians who were not inclined to follow his “early to bed, early to rise” philosophy.  In fact the idea for daylight savings time was first proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson, an entomologist in New Zealand who valued after-hours daylight because of his hobby of collecting insects.  Hudson proposed a two hour daylight shift in a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society.  He reasoned the practice would “bring working hours of the day within the period of daylight”.

Hudson’s proposal was received with mixed reactions according to records, and three years later he refined the idea, arguing that adjusting the clocks twice a year would allow the early morning daylight hours to be utilized, and “a long period of daylight leisure would be made available in the evening for cricket, gardening, cycling, or any other outdoor pursuit”.

Nineteen years later, Germany was the first country to formally adopt daylight savings time, in order to reduce energy demand during World War I.

Pheasant | Missouri firearms deer season and the Kansas pheasant season to open Saturday

Look for a crowd in the Missouri woods and Kansas fields Saturday.

The occasion? Opening day of the Missouri firearms deer season and the Kansas pheasant season.

About 450,000 hunters will be out for Missouri deer and 125,000 for Kansas gamebirds.

The prospects are outstanding, as usual.

Though Missouri wildlife officials expect the firearms kills to be down slightly this year, they still expect hunters to take plenty of deer, especially in the northern part of the state. In Kansas, parts of the western region have their largest pheasant populations in 20 years, promising good hunting.

Missouri youth deer season

Young hunters made the most of their privileged status last weekend, shooting 13,263 deer in the first segment of the Missouri youth deer season.

That was the third-highest total in the season’s 10-year history. The record was set in 2004, when youth hunters shot 13,466 deer.

Last year, youngsters took 13,328 during the early hunt.

This year, Osage was the top county with 304 deer checked in. Callaway was second with 277 and Franklin third with 266.

No lead ban

Fishermen can relax.

All that talk about the possible ban on lead fishing sinkers? It was just that: talk.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday denied a petition by several environmental groups to ban lead in fishing tackle.

The move came two months after the EPA had rejected the groups’ attempt to have lead banned in hunting ammunition.

In their petition, the groups said that lead from spent ammunition and lost fishing sinkers is ingested and causes the death of 10 to 20 million birds and animals a year. But the EPA said the petitioners didn’t adequately make a case that is required under law to ban the lead in fishing gear.

Turkey season a bust

Missouri’s fall firearms turkey season was one to forget.

Hunters shot only 5,928 birds in the month-long season that ended last Sunday — the second-lowest total in the 33-year history of the fall season.

Resource scientists with the Department of Conservation said low interest among hunters was partly to blame. Only 13,736 permits were sold, marking a dramatic dropoff. As many as 50,000 permits have been sold in one fall turkey season.

A vote for hunting and fishing

Three states — Arkansas, South Carolina and Tennessee — overwhelming passed measures Tuesday to establish a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to hunt and fish.

Only in Arizona did such a measure go down to defeat. There, 763,744 residents voted no on the measure, while 593,310 voted yes.

Opening weekend of duck season

The Missouri duck season opened with a bang last weekend.

At several managed wetlands, hunters posted impressive averages with their harvests. At the Bob Brown Conservation Area in northwest Missouri, for example, 84 hunters shot 349 ducks in the two days — an average of 4.15 ducks per person.

Hunting was just as impressive at the Grand Pass Conservation Area in central Missouri. Hunters averaged more than three ducks per person over the weekend and 4.53 on Monday.

Missouri’s daily bag limit is six ducks.

Hunting accidents

A new study reveals that guns might not be the most dangerous part of hunting.

Falls from tree stands may pose even more of a threat.

A study by the Ohio State University Medical Center found that in a 10-year period, 50 percent of the 130 injuries doctors treated were from falls from tree stands. About 30 percent were from gunshot wounds — 58 percent of those self-inflicted.

The St. Louis area’s reputation as a world-class fishery for blue catfish got another boost recently.

Fishing on the Mississippi River near Alton, Ill., in late October, a fisherman caught a blue cat that weighed 105 pounds, one of the biggest ever taken in North America.

On July 20, the potential world record blue cat, a fish weighing 130 pounds, was caught on the Missouri River not far from the St. Louis area.

The rapper has served 80% of his original sentence for possession of a firearm and is now likely to be out tomorrow (Friday 4 Nov).

Speaking to our US team a Rikers’ Island prison official said: “His time was miscalculated. He owed, he owes one day of 'good time,' so it's gonna be another night.

“If you get an infraction in jail, they'll take away 'good time' — time that you accumulated for good behaviour.”

The Lollipop rapper was caught with an MP3 player and headphones whilst inside back in May.

Earlier this week he released a final prison letter thanking fans for their support. Weezy is expected to play a gig soon after being released in Miami.

Harry Reid Election Results

One of the most well known politicians in the United States for the past year has been Harry Reid. Reid found himself in the news after he was given the title as Senate Majority Leader after the Republicans took control of the Senate earlier this year.

While he was considered the Majority Leader, Reid still had to fight his way through an ugly election to remain as a Senator, representing the State of Nevada.

Reid ran against Sharron Angle, who became quite popular with the Tea Party following her accusation that Reid would not be strong enough to impose actual action to take care of any problem with illegal aliens in this country.

While Angle put up a good fight, Reid ultimately won the election by a comfortable margin. Reid ended up receiving over 360,000 votes, which was good enough for 55% of the total vote. Angle took home the majority of the remaining 45%.

California Election 2010 Results

The wild California election 2010 results went down to the wire as Jerry Brown came away with a hard fought victory over Meg Whitman in the race for Governor.  The California election in 2010 also had other big winners including Senator Barbara Boxer.
Boxer won by almost 10% over challenger Carly Fiorina and will help keep the balance of power to the Democrats in the Senate. 
The Democrats also faired well in the California election as Jerry Brown was projected to be the winner of the Governor's seat beating Meg Whitman easily.  The Harvard educated and former Ebay CEO Whitman spent over $140 million of her own money to finance the campaign only to fall in defeat.
Another major loss for the state was the overwhelming vote against the Prop 19 measure which would have made casual use of marijuana legal in the state.  Early estimates indicate that over 50% of the voters were against the ballot measure.

 Google admits further Street View privacy failures
Google has admitted it by chance captured entire emails and passwords from wireless networks in people’s houses when it was collecting pictures for its controversial Street View service.
The search engine 1st said in May it had mistakenly collected private information when its Street View cars were gathering up panoramic images, but said at the time the data was only “fragmentary” because the cars were moving.
However after investigations by “a number” of external regulators, Google admitted some whole e-mails, passwords and web addresses had also been picked up.
“We want to delete this data as soon as possible, and I would like to apologize again for the fact that we collected it in the 1st place,” Alan Eustace, vice president of engineering and research at Google, said in a blog post. “We're mortified by what happened.”
The California-based company will now improve its privacy controls, after a series of complaints from nations including Germany and Canada. From Dec, Google will train all staff in information security and privacy. Training for engineers will have a new focus on “the responsible collection, use and handling of data,” Mr Eustace said.
The company has also promoted its lead engineer working on privacy, Alma Whitten, to director of privacy in engineering and product management, and all new projects will have a component which addresses possible privacy issues.
Germany, Austria, Italy and France are among the countries investigating whether their citizens’ privacy has been breached by Google. The company said in June it had canceled private wireless data mistakenly collected in Austria, Denmark and Ireland.
